Parents' Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child be able to call me on their cell phone?

You can imagine what it would be like if we allowed 800 teenagers to keep their cell phones with them during the week of camp. You know how hard it is to get your son or daughter off the phone for even a few minutes. In order to keep the campers from being distracted and to minimize the chance for stolen phones, we ask that all cell phones be turned in to their sponsors at the beginning of the week. Of course if there is an emergency, you will be able to get in touch with your child by calling our main office number. [(828) 884-7811] If your child needs to get in touch with you, they can get permission to use the phone by coming by our main office and talking with one of our staff.

Will I get to talk to my child during the week?

We highly encourage sending mail, but we discourage phone calls. Unless it is an emergency, please refrain from contacting your child by phone at camp.

When will my child arrive home?

Camp ends Saturday morning after breakfast at 9:00 a.m.

Is there someone to help my child if they get hurt or sick?

We have several registered nurses on campsite and at least one nurse on call 24 hours a day. We are also equipped with a Health Service Building that is capable of taking care of most minor injuries and illnesses. We have a great working relationship with the hospital in town should there be the need for anything our Health Service people are not set up to handle. Be assured that we will contact you for any hospital visits. The best thing is for you just to ask your child to not get sick or hurt while they are here at camp!

What kind of clothes will they need to bring?

Our activities keep the campers very busy, and it can be warm in the summers at THE WILDS. We allow both guys and girls to wear shorts to the knees. Loose fitting and modest shirts are expected as well.  Also, make sure they pack swimwear. There will be plenty of opportunities for them to get wet with our water activities. For our evening services, we want the campers to dress up some. Guys will be expected to wear a collared shirt and pants. Girls will be expected to wear a skirt or dress that also is to the knee and loose fitting and modest.

Do they need to bring bedding?

Each camper will need to bring their own pillow and bedding. Bring bedding that fits a twin mattress.

What does my child do with prescribed medication?

Upon arrival, each camper will turn in any regularly prescribed medication to our Health Service Building. Each day, the camper will have the medicine readied by one our nurses and followed up on to make sure they have taken the dosage for that day.

Do they need to bring spending money?

No, but it sure is nice.  Our Kountry Store has a great selection of THE WILDS “gear” (t-shirts, hats, jackets, etc.). The store also has CDs, Bible Study books, and many other items that will help your child in their spiritual growth. Our Cool Beans Coffee Shoppe and Snack Shop are great places to get a refreshing drink or a middle of the day snack.

How many campers are in a cabin?

Normally, there are eight campers and one counselor per cabin. The cabin consists of campers all similar in age.
